I may not be making tones of cash quite yet but my educational background does give me some excellent insight on many strategic directions that are available to affiliate marketers. With that in mind I hope you enjoy the insight of my following post.

In the world of marketing they’re two strategies you should familiar yourself with, the push strategy and pull strategy. Whether you realize it or not as an affiliate marketer we are in some way using one of these strategies in our current campaign. The following is a brief description of what they are Followed by a discussion of each in terms of affiliate marketing:
A pull strategy is when the customer will want to go and learn more about a product or even buy it because they have interests for it. In essence they “pull†the product through its distribution channels.
A push strategy is when a product or service gets “pushed†through the distribution channel via promotions and other incentives. For example a manufacturer can offer 15% extra for each product the retailer sells. This results in the retailer trying to “push†the product to the customer.
The Affiliates Role
As an affiliate we are in a unique predicament, consumers are already in “search mode†so although the products are getting pushed through the distribution network to us consumers are also pulling the products in search of information. Now we must decide what to do. Do we continue to push the product to the consumer or do we utilize a pull strategy?
Start to Pull
A pull strategy is more time consuming then a push strategy but benefits are substantial. A great example of someone who uses a pull strategy is John Chow. Now users come to his site and think “wow this guy is awesome, he is so rich! I want to be like himâ€. So what do these people do? As soon as John posts about a product 50% of them rush to the advertiser’s page and out of them I am sure a good ratio continues to purchase. See the power of pull marketing? Imagine if you distinguish yourself in a popular niche like dating. Now instead of pushing consumers to the dating sites through a cheesy “top 10 review site†people will want to register to the site because they value your opinion!
Continue To Push
From my research and testing most affiliates use a Push strategy. For example they pick an offer then they make a landing page with the main purpose to funnel consumers to the advertiser’s page. To do this their landing pages focus on common tactics:
- Focuses on the service/product features they promote
- Focuses on client testimonials.
- Clearly states how the consumer will benefit
- Create reviews
- Big “click here†links
The Verdict
Both strategies have their strong points. Of coarse we all dream of successfully utilizing a pull strategy but the fact of the matter is that time is money and pull strategies take lots of time. I predict that as Google slaps continue to occur and page quality becomes more important most super affiliates will slowly start transferring (if they have not done so already) to a pull strategy. The trick will be to create revenue streams with a push strategy while slowly developing an empire of “pull†sites.
