As part of my marketing strategy to get traffic to this blog I made an effort to comment more on other blogs within my niche. In true affiliate marketing fashion I split test my experiment between two popular blogs: www.JohnChow.com and www.uberaffiliate.com.
My initial thoughts was that John Chow would send a lot more traffic due to his huge reader base but boy was I wrong. After 5 comments on his blog (including one where I was first) not one person made it over to my blog. On the other hand I was pleasantly surprised with the traffic from uberaffiliate.com. After 5 comments on his blog I have seen 85 visitors. To top things off the traffic that came from uberaffiliate was also of decent quality (chances are some of you are from his blog… so thanks for readingJ). Check out the stats from the traffic he sent me:
Now the question is would blog traffic convert? Lets say I comment on popular blogs in the finance niche and I send users to a my own blog about financial help where I would promote various debt consulting companies in my blog posts. Would I be able to convert on this free traffic source or would I be able to at least get some e-mails for a mailing list? This would be an interesting approached to experiment with and I will be sure to blog about it if I do try it out

I’m one of those Uber readers…
Nice :). Thanks for reading.
So it would seem that not all “big” blogs are equal. That’s interesting - I wonder what the average traffic rate is for the “a-list” as a whole…
JohnChow.com gets 60+ comments per post. It seems like most of his visitors never read other comments because John posts so often. I also don’t think John’s blog is in the same league as uberaffiliate.com
I’m over from Uber way myself, that’s a blog with some quality content. Nothing against the Chow but he’s never captured my interest enough to claim any feed reader space.
[...] After 5 comments, he received a large goose egg, 0 visits from Chow. After 5 comments on my blog, he got over 85 hits to his blog - a lot of them good quality too. Sorry Chow I’m just the man and you know it. You can see all the results here. [...]
I have been doing this ever since I started my blog. I noticed about 50-100 hits extra per day when I made an attempt to get on the top commentators list. Do this for 10 just as popular sites, and you may see almost 1,000 extra hits. NOTE: If you slack off, so will your hits. So keep commenting. Read my post on Extra bump in traffic
Congrats on getting an entire post about this case study. I am sure you will get a lot more than 86 views now.

Hmm…good point - have to comment more on familiar blogs from now on - maybe it gets me some more traffic - I’m not complaining but every new visitor is valuable
lol. thats interesting..
I thought chow is more popular
That’s great, especially that there is targeted traffic.
